CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger. This gentle hands-on technique focuses on balancing the rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid and releasing tensions within the central nervous system. Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body.
The craniosacral system consists of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord. Imbalances or restrictions within this system can cause a range of physical and emotional ailments. CST is effective in treating various conditions, including migraines, headaches, chronic pain, stress-related disorders, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
One remarkable aspect of CST is its ability to address physical and emotional imbalances. Releasing physical restrictions often leads to a sense of deep relaxation, allowing emotional tension and trauma to be released. Clients frequently report feelings of calmness, clarity, and enhanced vitality after a session.
Many individuals carry the weight of past traumas, which may not only occupy mental space but also become entrenched within the body, leading to discomfort, pain, and dysfunction.
During a SER session, the practitioner begins by assessing the client’s physical state and identifying any areas of restriction or tension, often using techniques such as craniosacral therapy to enhance body awareness and help clients access and process these stored emotions.
Through a combination of dialogue, touch, and visualization, the practitioner guides and encourages the client to express and process stored emotions safely. Following the release, practitioners help clients integrate their experiences, fostering a sense of clarity and emotional balance.
By addressing and releasing suppressed emotions, individuals often experience relief from anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and a reduction in physical symptoms, such as chronic pain or tension. SER promotes greater self-awareness, improved relationships, communication, and connection with others.
