CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger. This gentle hands-on technique focuses on balancing the rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid and releasing tensions within the central nervous system. Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body.
CST is effective in treating various conditions, including migraines, headaches, chronic pain, stress-related disorders, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The craniosacral system consists of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord. This system plays a vital role in maintaining the health and functionality of the central nervous system. Imbalances or restrictions within this system can cause a range of physical and emotional ailments. Therapists use gentle pressure and subtle movements to restore optimal flow and balance to the cerebrospinal fluid and the surrounding tissues. This process encourages the body's self-correction mechanisms, promoting relaxation, pain relief, and improved overall well-being.
One remarkable aspect of CST is its ability to address physical and emotional imbalances. Releasing physical restrictions often leads to a sense of deep relaxation, allowing emotional tension and trauma to be released. Clients frequently report feelings of calmness, clarity, and enhanced vitality after a session.
Many individuals carry the weight of past traumas, which may not only occupy mental space but also become entrenched within the body, leading to discomfort, pain, and dysfunction. During a SER session, practitioners use gentle touch and various manual techniques to help clients access and process these stored emotions. This approach encourages the body to communicate its needs and identifies areas of tension or discomfort that may be linked to emotional blockages.
The practitioner begins by assessing the client’s physical state and identifying any areas of restriction or tension, often using techniques such as craniosacral therapy to enhance body awareness. Through a combination of dialogue, touch, and visualization, the practitioner guides the client to connect with their physical sensations and feelings associated with past experiences. As the client becomes aware of and acknowledges these stored emotions, they are encouraged to express and process them safely. Following the release, practitioners help clients integrate their experiences, fostering a sense of clarity and emotional balance.
By addressing and releasing suppressed emotions, individuals often experience relief from anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and a reduction in physical symptoms, such as chronic pain or tension. SER promotes greater self-awareness, improved relationships, communication, and connection with others.
Pediatric CranioSacral Therapy is a child-centered therapy that uses a light touch to release compression and tension among the cranial bones of the head, spine, and sacrum. This gentle hands-on technique facilitates the unwinding of areas of compression and misalignment, to enhance your child's innate ability to self-heal.
CranioSacral Therapy is a highly effective treatment for babies, starting from newborns, aimed at addressing common conditions often linked to compressive forces on the baby's head during pregnancy or birth. Working with a baby's head early on can be particularly beneficial since their bones are softer and not yet fused, making them highly responsive to treatment. Many issues that babies experience, such as colic, poor sleep, or acid reflux, can stem from an agitated nervous system resulting from birth trauma. By soothing the nervous system, craniosacral therapy can alleviate these symptoms, which can be distressing for both the baby and the parents, leading to a happier and more settled demeanor in babies. Treatments can involve both babies and parents, providing a beautiful bonding experience.
